The 11 Best David Bowie Songs For Every Running Occasion

I went to high school from August of 2004 to May of 2008 but if it were up to me, the years would have been 1980 to 1984.

I wanted the side ponytail, the off-the-shoulder tops, the synthesizer background music, the nonchalant cool that Madonna, David Bowie and others of the era seemed to radiate with every lyric and every step... and that you could never duplicate in the setting of a public high school in suburban Maryland.

I somehow convinced my teammates to let me make the mix CDs for every occasion -- from cross country meet road trips to Girl Scout sleepovers to the prom party bus -- and each time, they featured the exact same songs, the exact same artists: Bowie, Madonna, Roxy Music, Billy Idol, The Clash, New Order, Depeche Mode, Talking Heads, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.

Bowie is [was] much more than an 80's act, and in fact, many of the songs included here are not from the 80's decade at all. But when I remember discovering Bowie for the first time, I associate him [and my much-loved copy of "Best of Bowie"] with the 1980's.

What I'm trying to say is... Bowie was a key point in the soundtrack to my high school existence, which centered fully around the cross country and track field seasons. This is me sharing a few of my favorite songs.
