FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota
State University will induct its 39th annual class of seven new members into
the Bison Athletic Hall of Fame and its fourth team into the Bison Athletic
Hall of Champions on Friday, Oct. 1.
The addition of the seven
new members will bring the number of individuals enshrined to 238.
The newest members of the
Hall are the 1970 North Central Conference championship football team; former
NDSU president JIM OZBUN and first lady SONJA OZBUN; All-America
sprinter DAWN (KOEHN) BEIL (1989-93); honorable mention All-America
fullback and football captain DENNIS PREBOSKI (1968-70); All-America
setter TERESA (HEGG) WENDLAND (1989-92); All-America offensive guard MATT
TRACY (1985-88); All-America middle hitter JULIE (SHERMAN) PASCHE
(1988-91); and All-America linebacker CHARLIE STOCK (1985-88).
The announcement was made
by Hall of Fame committee chairman LEE PETERSEN.
The induction will take
place at the Holiday Inn in Fargo. Lunch will begin at 11 a.m. with the
induction ceremonies to start at 11:30 a.m.
A limited number of
tickets will be available Monday from the NDSU Athletic Media Relations Office
(701-231-7197) for a cost of $25 per ticket.
The group will also be
recognized at the NDSU-Western Illinois homecoming football game Oct. 2.

1970
NORTH CENTRAL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL TEAM: North
Dakota State made it two in a row over the University of Montana in the
Camellia Bowl by whipping the Grizzlies 31-16 to cap NDSU's third straight
undefeated season...It was NDSU's fifth victory in six bowl games over a
seven-year span...The Bison took advantage of five Montana fumbles and the play
of quarterback Mike Bentson, who totalled 208 yards of total offense and scored
three touchdowns on runs of 4, 1 and 5 yards...Dennis Preboski scored from 5
yards out and Jim Twardy booted a 34-yard field goal for the Bison...NDSU led
28-3 in the second quarter and was never seriously threatened...The Bison
finished the year 9-0-1 with the only blemish a 14-14 tie with Eastern Michigan
in the season opener...The Bison won their seventh straight North Central
Conference championship and finished third in the AP poll and fourth in the UPI
poll.
JIM AND SONJA OZBUN,
president and first lady, 1988-95: Presided over a
very successful run of Bison athletics, including two NCAA football
championships and four women's basketball national championships...Participated
in the move of football to the Fargodome and also in the establishment of the
Ellig Sports Complex...The couple met at NDSU and was married in 1959...Jim
earned bachelor's and master's degrees in agriculture at NDSU before moving to
North Carolina State, where he earned a doctorate in plant physiology and
soils...His career as a university professor and administrator took him from
Cornell to Minnesota, Kansas State, Washington State, and finally back to NDSU
in 1988 as president...Sonja expanded her role as a full-time homemaker to be
the hostess for thousands of people who were invited to the president's home,
including student-athletes and their families and fans...The couple retired in
1995 to a small cattle ranch in western North Dakota where Jim raised Hereford
cattle and quarter horses and Sonja became an avid gardener...They have two
children and six grandchildren.
DAWN (KOEHN) BEIL, women's
track and field sprinter, 1989-93: One of the most
versatile sprinters in school history...Nine-time NCAA Division II
All-American, running on six outdoor relays and three indoor...NCC's only
four-time women's 100-meter dash champion from 1990 to 1993...Three-time NCC
200-meter dash champion...Ran on seven outdoor and three indoor NCC
championship relay teams...Four-time individual NCC indoor champ in the 55,
200, 300 and 400 meters...Seven-time NCC outdoor champion in the 100 and 200
meters, the second most titles in NCC outdoor history...1993 CoSIDA Academic
At-Large All-America second team...Two-time Academic All-North Central
Conference first team...Two-time National Strength and Conditioning
All-American...Set NDSU indoor and Bison Sports Arena 300 record (:40.71)...And
still holds records as a member of NDSU's outdoor 800-meter medley relay
(1:46.34) and the NDSU and BSA record indoor 800-meter relay (1:41.57)...On the
NDSU outdoor list, still ranks No. 7 in the 100 (:11.92) and No. 9 in the 200
(:24.53)...On the Bison indoor list, ranks No. 4 in the 300 (:40.71)...Grew up
in Watertown, S.D., where she was a three-time track team MVP and a state
champion in the 200 meters, 400 meters and 800-meter relay...Held the 100
meters record at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays from 1989 to 2008...Two-time
state gymnastics champion in the vault and runner-up in the all-around and also
played basketball for two seasons...Inducted into the Watertown High School
Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001...She still holds the school record for the 100
meters with a time of 11.89 seconds...Graduated from NDSU in 1993 with a
bachelor's degree in physical education and earned a master's degree in
elementary education from Minot State in 2002...She began her professional
career as a business education and physical education teacher and assistant
coach for track, volleyball and basketball at Odebolt (Iowa) High School...Has
been teaching health and physical education at Eastwood Elementary in West
Fargo since 1998...Served as the head track coach at Moorhead High School in
1994 and was an assistant coach at Fargo North from 1996 to 1998 and Fargo
South from 1999 to 2006...Also served as an assistant gymnastics coach at West
Fargo High School from 1996 to 2000...Has been named the North Dakota
Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year and was a recipient of the
North Dakota Association for Physical Education, Recreation and Dance
Pathfinder Award as an advocate for girls and women in sports...She and her
husband, Rory, have three children, Kaia, Merritt and Joshua.
DENNIS PREBOSKI, football
fullback, 1968-70: Three-year letterman and part of three undefeated teams and
three bowl game victories in his career...Co-captain and Most Valuable Player
of the 1970 Bison team that won its seventh straight North Central Conference
championship...Led the 1970 team in rushing with 773 yards in 157 carries en
route to All-North Central Conference honors and All-America honorable mention
by the Associated Press...Earned the nicknames "Supersub" and
"The Fifth Back" for his success off the bench behind star backfield
mates Joe Roller, Tim Mjos, Paul Hatchett and Bruce Grasamke...Career stats
included 1,258 yards on 251 carries and 17 touchdowns...Also caught 10 passes
for 110 yards and two TDs...Grew up in Antigo, Wis., where he participated in
football, wrestling and baseball in high school...He hit over .600 as a junior
on the diamond and wrestled in the state tournament as a senior...On the
gridiron, he was a two-time team MVP, all-conference and all-state pick...Led
the Wisconsin Valley Conference in rushing for three seasons and set Antigo's
single-season and career rushing records...The career mark was established over
three 7-game seasons and held up for 29 years when longer seasons were the
norm...While at NDSU, he was a member of the Gamma Delta chapter of the Kappa
Delta Pi honor society...Graduated from NDSU in 1971 with a bachelor's degree
in physical education and later earned a master's degree in education from
Wisconsin-Stevens Point...He taught and coached for one year in Burns, Ore.,
and two years in Fond du Lac, Wis., before returning to his hometown of Antigo,
Wis., to teach for 35 years until his retirement last year...He spent eight
years as the English department chair and was the head wrestling coach for 10
years...He took Antigo's wrestling program from the bottom of the conference to
three straight regional championships, and the team won a state title two years
after his resignation as head coach...He was married to his wife of 43 years,
Marti, as a freshman at NDSU...The couple has one daughter and four
grandchildren.
TERESA (HEGG) WENDLAND,
volleyball setter, 1989-92: AVCA Division II
All-America second team in 1991 and first team in 1992...ASICS/Volleyball
Monthly Division II All-America first team in 1992...Three-time AVCA All-Region
first team...1991 NCAA Elite All-Tournament team...MVP of 1991 NCAA North
Central Regional...NDSU advanced to NCAA Elite Eight all four seasons, national
a runner-up finish in 1990 and third place in 1989 and 1991...Three-time
All-North Central Conference first team, including 1992 MVP honors...Two-time
Academic All-NCC first team...Led the NCC in assists as a sophomore and
junior...Three-time NCC Player of the Week...NDSU won four straight league
titles during her career...Part of NDSU's record home winning streak of 42
consecutive matches...On the NDSU career charts, still ranks No. 2 in assists
(4,870) and No. 8 in service aces (178)...Held the NDSU three-set match and
five-set match records for assists from 1991 to 1998...Raised in rural Winger,
Minn., and attended Win-E-Mac High School, where she lettered in volleyball,
basketball, and track and field...Part of the volleyball state runner-up teams
in 1986 and 1987 and a state championship in 1988...Earned all-state honors as
a junior and senior....Also a state tournament participant in basketball and
track and field...Graduated in 1993 from the NDSU hospitality and tourism
management program...Worked as a manager of NordicTrack's Healthy Express
restaurant from 1993 to 1997 and has been a stay-at-home mother since
1998...She and her husband, Brandt, reside in Lino Lakes, Minn., with their
four children, Brandon, Brooke, Catherine and Christian.
MATT TRACY, football
offensive guard, 1985-88: First team All-North Central Conference and first team
All-America by the Associated Press and the Football Gazette in
1988...Three-year starter for the Bison on the offensive line from 1986 to 1988
as the Bison went 33-4...Integral part of the O-line that helped NDSU lead the
country in rushing in 1988 and finish second in 1986 and 1987...Started in two
NCAA title wins and was part of three national championship teams...Played
under Bison Hall of Fame coaches Don Morton, Earle Solomonson and Rocky
Hager...Key blocker for Hall of Fame quarterbacks Jeff Bentrim and Chris
Simdorn, who each won the Harlon Hill Trophy as Division II football's top
player...Born and raised in Superior, Wis...Lettered in basketball and football
for Superior Senior High...Played tight end and defensive end on the gridiron,
leading his team to a 10-2 record and a state semifinal appearance as a
senior...Graduated from NDSU in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in business
administration...He is employed by Boston Scientific, a medical device
manufacturer...He has been with the company for 17 years in various positions
and is currently a vice president focusing on the pacemaker franchise...He has
been married for 20 years to former NDSU track and field athlete Karen
Gebeke...They reside in St. Michael, Minn., with their three children, Joshua,
Sydney and Jackson.
JULIE (SHERMAN) PASCHE,
middle hitter, volleyball, 1988-91: AVCA Division II
All-America first team selection in 1990 and 1991...Two-time ASICS/Volleyball
Magazine All-American, including a first team in 1991...Two-time NCAA Elite
Eight all-tournament team...Three-time AVCA All-North Central Region
pick...Three-time All-NCC first team selection...Led the NCC in kills and hitting
percentage en route to Player of the Year honors in 1991...Five-time conference
Player of the Week...The Bison advanced to NCAA Elite Eight all four seasons,
placing third in 1988, 1989, 1991 and second in 1990...Member of four straight
NCC championship volleyball teams...Selected as an alternate for the 1991 U.S.
Olympic Sports Festival and was one of five Division II players invited to a
tryout for the USA National 'B' Team in 1991...National Strength and
Conditioning All-American...One of the most prolific attackers in Bison
history...Still holds school records for most kills in a three-set match with
26 vs. Florida Southern...Her four-set match record of 35 kills vs. Augustana
is the NDSU overall record...Also has the record for most attacks in a single
season (1,517), most kills per set in a season (5.00), and most blocks in a
five-set match (15 vs. St. Cloud State)...Ranks second all-time at NDSU in
kills (1,855) and kills per set (3.61) and ranks among the top five in points,
points per set, attacks, block assists, and total blocks...Also competed in
track and field for at NDSU...Six-time All-North Central Conference performer
in the high jump...Career bests were 5 feet, 6 inches indoors and 5-7
outdoors...Came to the Bison from Shanley High School in Fargo, where she
lettered in basketball, volleyball and track...Earned the state's "Miss
Volleyball" award in 1988 and was a candidate for "Miss
Basketball" in addition to being named the state's Female Athlete of the
Year...Graduated from NDSU in 1993 with bachelor's degrees in biotechnology and
microbiology...Earned a master's degree in plant pathology from NDSU in 2001
and is currently a Ph.D. candidate...She has been a microbiologist and
laboratory research manager at NDSU for the last 15 years...Author of more than
20 refereed journal articles as well as numerous abstracts and symposia
proceedings...Has presented research at scientific meetings in England,
Scotland, Ireland, Italy and Greece...She and her husband, Steven have two
boys, George and Ted.
CHARLIE STOCK,
football linebacker, 1985-88: Second
team All-America by the Football Gazette in 1988 and honorable mention
All-America by the Associated Press...Two-time first team All-North Central
Conference in both 1987 and 1988...Co-captain and MVP of the 1988 NCAA
championship team...Four-year starter with 278 career tackles...Made 25
tackles-for-loss including 10 quarterback sacks...Had 16 pass
breakups...Started in three national title games for NDSU in 1985, 1986 and
1988...The first four-time Academic All-NCC selection alongside teammate Casey
Bradley...NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winner...National Strength and
Conditioning All-American...Born and raised in Mahnomen, Minn...Lettered in
football and basketball three years each and was a two-time schoolboy national
champion in AAU freestyle wrestling...Led the state of Minnesota with 1,888
rushing yards in 1983 and was named to the all-state team...Set school records
at Mahnomen for rushing yards in a season (1,888) and career (3,332),
single-season all-purpose yards (2,316), and single season rushing attempts
(248) and yards per carry (7.6)...Graduated from NDSU in 1989 with a bachelor's
degrees in physical education and economics...Graduated first in class in 1992
from the UND law school, where he made the Dean's List all six semesters and
received multiple academic awards and scholarships...He was a trial attorney
for Vogel Law Firm in Fargo from 1992 to 1998 and has practiced with Rust,
Stock, Rasmusson & Knutson out of Crookston, Minn., since 1999...He has
been State's Attorney for Steele County in North Dakota since 2002 and also
served as State's Attorney and Assistant State's Attorney in Griggs County...He
and his wife, Sally, reside in Hillsboro, N.D., with their daughter, Madison.
