Bison Women Claim Four Titles at Bill Bergan Invitational

AMES, Iowa ? The North Dakota State women's track and field team won four event titles en route to a third place finish at the Bill Bergan Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 29. Senior Christine (Bruins) Schmaltz claimed the 800 meter title and junior Leslie Brost took first in the pole vault.  Senior Whitney Carlson won the 60 meter hurdles and long jump for the third consecutive meet.

 

The Bison finished with 76.33 points to take third.  Missouri was first with 125.50 points.

 

Schmaltz posted a season-best time of 2:09.35 in the 800 meters and senior Brittany Schanandore was right behind her in second place in 2:10.52, only two-tenths of a second off her personal best.

 

Brost tallied a season-best mark in the pole vault after clearing 13-7 ¼.  Freshman Caitlin Mack's mark of 11-7 ¾ is ninth all-time.   In the 60 meter hurdles, Carlson clocked in at 8.71 seconds, over a tenth of a second faster than the second place finisher.  Her winning long jump mark was 19-6 ¼. 

 

In the 3,000 meters, senior Amy Jo Thorne ran a personal best time of 9:57.26 to finish sixth. Her time ranks eighth all-time at NDSU.

 

In the 60 meter dash, Jennifer Nagberi took second in 7.78 and redshirt freshman Antoinette Goodman placed third in 7.79.  The 4x400 relay team of Carlson, Ashley Tingelstad, Schmaltz and Schanandore finished second in 3:48.54.

 

NDSU returns to the friendly confines of the Bison Sports Arena for the Bison Open Friday, Feb. 4 and Saturday, Feb. 5.
