Carlson Claims Pentathlon Title at Jack Johnson Classic

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ? Junior Whitney Carlson won the pentathlon at the Jack Johnson Classic to lead North Dakota State to a second place finish in the six-team meet.  Host Minnesota won the meet with 558.5 points.

Carlson claimed the pentathlon title with 3, 697 points after winning the 800 meters, 60 meter hurdles and long jump.  Her long jump mark of 19-10 ¼ is second on the NDSU all-time performance charts.

Senior Heather Zander finished second in the pentathlon with 3,645 points.  In the 60 hurdles portion of the pentathlon, Zander posted a time of 8.74, which is ranked fourth all-time at NDSU.

Carlson also won her section in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.67, leading a 1-2-3 NDSU finish in the section.  Zander was second in 8.85 while junior Devon Wentz was third in 9.05.

Freshman Deborah John finished sixth in the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.74, which is tied for fourth all-time at NDSU.  Sophomore Brittany Page tied her personal best in the same event with a time of 7.82.

In the 600 meters, junior Amy Bestland won her section in 1:38.35, which is ranked sixth all-time.  Fellow junior Devon Wentz posted a time of 1:39.63, ranking eighth all-time.

The Bison will now travel to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Invitational Saturday, Jan. 30.
