Carlson Sets School Pentathlon Record at Bison Open

FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State junior Whitney Carlson set a school record and reached an NCAA provisional mark in the pentathlon at the Bison Open on Friday, Feb. 12.  Carlson's score of 3,810 points broke the record set by teammate Heather Zander in 2009 by 12 points.  She is the second Bison to reach an NCAA provisional mark this year.

Carlson won three of the five events tonight.  Her first place long jump mark of 19-11 1/2 is a personal best and is ranked second all-time at NDSU.  She also won the 60 meter hurdles in 8.60 and the 800 meters in 2:24.52.

Senior Heather Zander was second in the pentathlon with 3,554 points.  She won the shot put with a mark of 34-1 1/4. 

Sophomore Leslie Brost claimed the pole vault title after clearing 12-7 1/2.  Senior Sammantha Kouba tied for second with a mark of 11-7 3/4.

Bison Open action continues Saturday, Feb. 13 beginning at 2:30 p.m. with the long jump.  Other field events start at 3 p.m. and the running events begin at 3:30 p.m.
