Carlson Reaches NCAA Provisional Mark and Sets NDSU Record in Long Jump

FARGO, N.D. ? North Dakota State junior Whitney Carlson broke a seven year old school record and reached an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the long jump at the Bison Open on Saturday.

Her leap of 20-4 ½ broke her own indoor personal best by five inches and Amanda Thieschafer's 2003 record by four and a half inches.  It is her second record and NCAA provisional mark of the meet after also winning the pentathlon Friday night.  Carlson also won the 60 meter hurdles in 8.65.

In the 60 meter final, three Bison placed in the top five.  Freshman Deborah John was second in 7.71, while sophomore Brittany Page came in third in a personal best time of 7.75, which ranks seventh all-time at NDSU.  Junior Jennifer Nagberi was fifth in 7.78, ranking 10th all-time.

Junior Christine Bruins set a Bison Sports Arena record of 2:09.97 in winning the 800 meters.  It was a season best time for Bruins by just under three seconds.  Freshman Faith Kruchowski was third in 2:17.90.

Freshman Toni Tollefson claimed the high jump title with a mark of 5-8 ½, only a quarter inch off her personal best.

The 4x400 relay team also placed first in 3:56.63.

NDSU will now play host to the 2010 Summit League Championships in two weeks.  The championships will be held Feb. 28-March 1 at the Bison Sports Arena.
