Bison Men Go For Third Consecutive Title, Host Summit League Championships

FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota State men's track and field team will play host to the 2010 Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships Sunday, Feb. 28 and Monday, March 1.  The Bison won the 2008 and 2009 league titles and will be aiming for their third straight championship this weekend.  Men's action begins at 9:45 on Sunday with the men's heptathlon 60 meter dash.  The rest of the track and running events start at 3 p.m. Sunday. On Monday, multi-event action begins at 9 a.m., while the field events begin at 11 a.m. and the running events start at 12 p.m.

 

Previewing the 2010 Championships

The Bison return two champions from last year's first place team.  Sophomore Weston Leutz claimed the 60 meter hurdles title, while junior Jeramy Geditz won his second straight high jump title.  NDSU leads the league in six events going into the championships. Leutz leads two events: the 60 meter hurdles (7.98) and the heptathlon (5,496 points).  Junior Eric Stroh holds the top spot in the 800 with a time of 1:51.97, while senior Scott Johnson leads the weight throw with a mark of 60-6 3/4.  Geditz leads the high jump with a mark of 7-1 1/2.  Sophomore Kevin Jackson is tied for the top spot in the 60 meters with a time of 6.81.  Oral Roberts leads six events, including a tie at 60 meters.  Southern Utah and Oakland lead two apiece.

 

Geditz, Leutz ranked in national top 20

On the strength of their NCAA provisional marks, junior Jeramy Geditz and sophomore Weston Leutz are both ranked nationally in the top 20.  Geditz is tied for 18th in the high jump with a mark of 7-1 1/2.  Three athletes are tied for first, clearing 7-4 1/4.  Leutz is No. 13 in the heptathlon with 5,496 points.  Oregon's Ashton Eaton holds the top spot with 6,256 points.

 

Orgon cracks NDSU top ten in weight throw

Redshirt freshman Casey Orgon won his flight in the weight throw at the Snowshoe Open on Friday, Feb. 19 to lead the Bison.  Orgon's throw of 56-1 is ranked sixth on the NDSU all-time performance charts.  Orgon also finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 47-3 ½.  Senior Scott Johnson and junior Sam Soholt also competed in the weight throw, finishing eighth and 10th, respectively.  Sophomore Kole Seiler was third in the 800.

 

Leutz wins Bison Open heptathlon, reaches NCAA provisional mark

Sophomore Weston Leutz won the Bison Open heptathlon with a score of 5,496 points on Saturday, Feb. 13.  Leutz's mark is an NCAA provisional mark and is second all-time at NDSU.  The Bison also claimed titles in three other events.  Sophomore Kevin Jackson won the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.13, while freshman Moses Heppner was first in the mile in 4:17.62.  Sophomore Travis Fitzke won the 800 in 1:55.13.
