Bison Women Capture Third Straight Summit League Indoor Title

FARGO, N.D. ? The North Dakota State women's track and field team won its third straight Summit League indoor championship on Monday, March 1.  The Bison finished with 198.5 points and captured seven league titles.  Oral Roberts was the runner-up with 131 points. 

Junior Whitney Carlson was named the Track Championships MVP for the second consecutive year after winning the 200 meters, the long jump and the 60 meter hurdles.  She also finished second in the pentathlon.  Carlson finished the meet with 38 points.

Head coach Ryun Godfrey claimed his third straight Coach of the Year award after leading the team to its third straight title.

Carlson won her second title of the championships in the 60 meter hurdles.  She crossed the line in 8.66, three-hundredths ahead of Southern Utah's Shaye Maurer.  Senior Heather Zander placed fourth in the race in 8.80, while fellow senior Devon Wentz was sixth in 8.98.

In the 200 meters, Carlson won the event in 25.06.  Sophomore Brittany Page was fourth in 25.27 and missed out on the podium by one-hundredth of a second.

Junior Christine Bruins won the 800 meters in 2:14.65.  She was able to hold off Southern Utah's Sharla Manuele down the stretch for the win.  Senior Amy Bestland placed third in 2:15.81.  Bruins also placed third in the mile run in a time of 5:01.68.

Sophomore Kristen Killoran won her second straight indoor triple jump title with a mark of 40-4.  Senior Brittni Bruenjes was third after posting a mark of 38-9.

Freshman Ashley Tingelstad finished third in the 400 meters with a time of 57.08.  Wentz came in fifth in 57.64, while junior Emily Black was seventh in 58.91.

In the 5,000 meters, freshman Lauren Rice finished second in a personal best time of 17:33.65.  Her time is ranked third all-time at NDSU. 

In the 60 meter final, Page was sixth in 7.78, while freshman Deborah John was seventh in 7.80.

The 4x400 relay team of Wentz, Page, John and Tingelstad finished second behind Oral Roberts in 3:52.55.

Senior Sammantha Kouba led the Bison in the pole vault, finishing third with a personal best mark of 11-11 ¾.  She now ranks sixth on the NDSU all-time performance charts.  Sophomore Amy Marquardt tied for fifth after clearing 10-11 ¾.
