Carlson Named Summit League Field Athlete of the Year

ELMHURST, Ill. - North Dakota State junior Whitney Carlson was selected as the Summit League Indoor Field Athlete of the Year in a vote of the league's coaches.  Southern Utah's Sharla Manuele was voted Track Athlete of the Year.

Carlson won titles in the long jump, 60 meter hurdles and the 200 meters at the Summit League Indoor Championships.  Her winning long jump mark of 20 feet 6 1/2 inches was a new league, school and arena record.  She set a league record in the 60 hurdles preliminaries, coming in first with a time of 8.55.  She won the final in 8.66.  The Buchanan, N.D. native claimed the 200 meter title in 25.06.  Carlson also finished second in the pentathlon with 3,696 points.  After winning multiple league titles and earning 38 points, Carlson was named the Track Championship MVP by the league coaches.

An all-league selection, Carlson reached NCAA provisonal qualifying standards in both the long jump and the pentathlon during the indoor season and also set NDSU records in the same events.   Carlson was a three-time indoor athlete of the week honoree.

On the men's side, UMKC's Anthony Boyer and SUU's Cameron Levins shared the Track Athlete of the Year honor, while Oral Roberts' Jack Whitt earned the Field Athlete of the Year award.
