Carlson Claims Three Events at Bison Open Saturday

FARGO, N.D. ? North Dakota State junior Whitney Carlson won three events to lead the women's track and field team at the Bison Open on Saturday, April 10.  Carlson won the long jump with a mark of 20 feet 10 ½ inches, which is currently eighth in the country.  She also won the 100 meter hurdles in 14.11 and the 400 meter hurdles in 1:01.20.

Freshman Ashley Tingelstad claimed first place in both the 200 meters and the 100 meters.  Tingelstad's 200 time of 24.45 is a personal best and is tied for fourth on the NDSU all-time performance charts.  She posted a time of 12.21 in the 100 meters.  Sophomore Brittany Page was second in the 200 with a time of 24.87, while junior Jennifer Nagberi came in second in the 100 in 12.46.

Overall, the Bison claimed 11 event titles at today's meet.

The 4x400 relay team of junior Emily Black, senior Amy Bestland, junior Brittany Gigstead and junior Christine Bruins finished first with a time of 3:50.63.

The Bison also won the 4x100 relay.  The team of Nagberi, Page, sophomore Kristen Killoran and senior Brittni Bruenjes finished in 47.09.

In the high jump, freshman Toni Tollefson claimed her third title of the season with a winning leap of 5-8.  Freshman Emily Stalpes was second after clearing 5-3 ¾. 

Freshman Leslie Brost led a 1-2-3 NDSU sweep in the pole vault.  Brost was first with a mark of 13-4 ¾, while senior Sammantha Kouba was second after clearing 11-10 ½.  Sophomore Amy Marquardt finished third with a mark of 11-10 ½. 

In the 800 meters, freshman Faith Kruchowski led a strong Bison contingent.  Kruchowski won the event in 2:19.43.  Junior Amy Jo Reuter just beat out Bestland for second place.  Reuter's time was 2:20.49 and Bestland's was 2:20.57.

Carlson led the Bison to a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 100 hurdles.  Senior Heather Zander was second in 14.52, while fellow senior Devon Wentz placed third in 14.56, only four-tenths behind Zander.  Stalpes was fourth in 15.65.  Wentz also placed second in the 400 hurdles in a time of 1:01.65.

The top five finishers in the long jump were also Bison.  Carlson was first, followed by Killoran with a mark of 19-8 ¼.  Bruenjes was third with a leap of 19-2 ½.

In the triple jump, Killoran took first place with a mark of 38-8 ¾.  Bruenjes was right behind her in second with a mark of 38-5 ½.

Senior Courtney Carpenter placed second in the javelin with a throw of 127-0.  In the 400 meters, Bruins came in second in 57.09, just edging out teammate Gigstead who was third in 57.96.

Sophomore Katie Johnson finished second in the shot put with a throw of 40-7 ½.

The Bison will now travel to Walnut, Calif. for the Mt. SAC Relays April 15-17.  The team will also compete at the Long Beach State Invitational on April 17.
