Carlson Sets New School Record in Heptathlon at Mt. SAC

AZUSA, Calif. - North Dakota State junior Whitney Carlson set a new school record in the heptathlon at the Mt. SAC Combined Events on Thursday, April 15.  Carlson finished fifth in the event with a score of 5,343 points to break Andi Noel's 2001 record of 5,294 points. 

It is Carlson's fifth outdoor school record.  She also holds records in the 100 meters, 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and long jump.

She won two of the seven events and finished in the top six in four of them.  Carlson won the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 13.80.  She also won the 200 meters in 24.53, which is tied for eighth all-time at NDSU.  The Buchanan, N.D. native was second in the long jump with a leap of 20-6 1/4.

Senior Heather Zander placed eighth in the heptathlon with a personal best score of 5,203.  Her score is third all-time at NDSU.  In the 100 hurdles, Zander's time of 14.05 is tied for fourth all-time and was good for fourth place.  She also came in third in the 200 meters in 24.66.

Freshman Emily Stalpes finished 24th in the Cal Invitational heptathlon with a score of 4,135.

At the Mt. SAC Relays, junior Amy Jo Reuter was 10th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:03.97.

The Bison will continue action at the Mt. SAC Relays Friday and Saturday.  Members of the team will also compete at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday and the Beach Invitational on Saturday.
