Leutz Captures Decathlon Title, Bison in Second After Day Two of Summit League Championships

TOLEDO, Ohio ? North Dakota State sophomore Weston Leutz won the decathlon with a score of 6,807 points to lead the Bison on the second day of action at the Summit League Championships.  After eight scored events, NDSU is in second place with 73 points.  Southern Utah maintained the lead with 82 points.

 

Leutz won two of the final five events to close out the decathlon.  He placed first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.86 and also took first in the javelin with a throw of 163 feet 9 inches.

 

The Bison also had three other athletes score points in the decathlon.  Sophomore Ryan Jenson came in third with 6,458 points.  Freshman Andy Lillejord was fourth with 6,325 points and senior Mike Hagen was fifth with 6,321 points.

 

NDSU tallied points in each of the five finals held on Friday.  In the long jump, junior Doug Scott finished fifth with a leap of 23-0, while freshman Lee Dhein was sixth after jumping 22-11 ¼.

 

Redshirt freshman Casey Orgon placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 49-7.

 

In the high jump, sophomore Jeramy Geditz finished second after clearing 6-6 ¾ on his second attempt.  Leutz also picked up another point after coming in eight with a jump of 6-4 ¾.

 

In the only running final of the day, junior Tom Wagner came in fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:40.69.

 

The Bison had runners advance to Saturday's finals in all six running events.

 

Junior Eric Stroh won the 800 meter preliminaries with a time of 1:53.83.  He will be joined in the final by freshman Moses Heppner, who was third in 1:54.49 and sophomore Travis Fitzke, who came in fourth in 1:54.57.  Redshirt freshman Dan Merritt also made the final after finishing ninth in 1:54.96.

 

In the 110 meter hurdles, three Bison will be in the finals.  Sophomore Kevin Jackson led the way with a fourth place finish in 14.82.  Freshman Matt Tetzlaff was fifth in 14.95 and Leutz was eighth in 15.29.

 

Jackson also advanced in the 100 meters and the 200 meters.  He was second in the 100 meter preliminaries with a time of 10.82 and third in the 200 prelims in 22.18.  He will be joined in the 100 meter final by Dhein, who was eighth in 11.05.

 

Sophomore Jason Duchscherer and redshirt freshman Andrew Balzer both advanced in the 400 meter dash.  Duchscherer was fourth in 48.09 while Balzer was eighth in a time of 49.31.

 

Tetzlaff will be the lone NDSU representative in the 400 meter hurdles after coming in third in the preliminaries in a time of 54.57.

 

The championships will come to a close on Saturday, May 15 beginning at 9 a.m. Central.
