Carlson Books Spot in National Semifinals in Long Jump

AUSTIN, Texas - North Dakota State junior Whitney Carlson finished 10th in the long jump at the NCAA Preliminary Round to advance to the national semifinals in Eugene, Ore. June 9-12.  Carlson posted a mark of 20 feet 7 1/4 inches.  She will now be competing in both the long jump and the heptathlon at the championships.

Carlson also advanced to Saturday's national quarterfinals in the 100 meter hurdles after running a time of 13.66 to finish 23rd in the first round.  The time ties the school record she set in 2009. The quarterfinal will be run Saturday at 7:20 p.m.

In the 800 meters, junior Christine Bruins came in 14th with a personal best time of 2:07.05, improving her mark as fourth on the NDSU all-time performance charts.  Junior Brittany Gigstead was 23rd after running a time of 2:09.89.  The top 12 advanced to the national semifinals in Eugene.

Three other Bison also competed in the long jump.  Sophomore Kristen Killoran was 36th with a mark of 19-1 1/2 while senior Heather Zander was 42nd with a leap of 18-9 3/4.  Senior Brittni Bruenjes came in 46th with a mark of 18-1 3/4.

In addition to the 100 hurdles quarterfinals tomorrow, Killoran will compete in the triple jump at 2 p.m. and redshirt freshman Toni Tollefson will compete in the high jump at 4 p.m.
