Bison Women to Compete at U.S. Track and Field Championships

FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota State women's track and field team will send five athletes to the 2010 U.S. Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. The competition will be held June 23-27.  Senior Heather Zander will compete in the hepathlon after setting a school record of 5,427 points at the NCAA Championships. Junior Whitney Carlson will compete in the long jump after setting a school record mark of 21 feet 1 1/2 inches this season.  This is Carlson's second straight year at the U.S. Championships as she finished 11th in the long jump last spring.  Sophomore Leslie Brost will compete in the pole vault after breaking her own school record with a mark of 14-1 1/4.  Redshirt freshman Toni Tollefson made the high jump field after clearing  a school record height of 5-11 1/2.  Freshman Emily Stalpes made the heptathlon field in the U.S. Junior Championships with a personal best score of 4,296 points.

Thursday, June 24 - Jr. Heptathlon Day 2 (Stalpes), 11 a.m.

Friday, June 25 - High Jump finals (Tollefson), 12:30 p.m.

      Long Jump finals (Carlson), 2 p.m.

      Heptathlon Day 1 (Zander), 10 a.m.

Saturday, June 26 - Pole Vault finals (Brost), 12 p.m.

      Heptathlon Day 2 (Zander), 11:20 a.m.

 

Former Bison to compete at U.S. Championships

Two former NDSU All-Americans will also be competing at the U.S. Championships this weekend.  Amanda Smock, formerly Amanda Thieschafer, will participate in the triple jump after reaching a mark of 44-10 3/4.  She finished sixth at the championships a year ago. Laura Januszewski, formerly Laura Hermanson, will run the 800 meters for the second straight year.  She finished fifth at last year's championships.

 

Championship Information

The 2010 U.S. Track and Field Championships will be held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.  Fans can order tickets at GoDrakeBulldogs.com or 515-271-3674.  The final three days of competition will be televised on ESPN and NBC.  All times below Central.

Zander, Carlson named All-American at NCAA Championships

Senior Heather Zander and junior Whitney Carlson became the second and third Bison to earn Division I All-America honors at the NCAA Championships.  Zander posted a ninth place finish in the heptathlon with a school record score of 5,427 points.  She tallied top 10 finishes in five of the seven events.  Carlson finished 11th in the long jump with a mark of 20-3 3/4.  Redshirt freshman Toni Tollefson also competed at the NCAA Championships, but failed to clear a height in the high jump.
