NDSU Men Win Six Events at Bison Open

FARGO, N.D. – Senior Ted Rud won the heptathlon with a personal-best 5,331 points to lead the North Dakota State men's track and field team at the Bison Open on Saturday, Feb. 5.  Rud's score ranks third in school history.  He won two of the seven events contested, taking first in the long jump and the 1,000 meters.  Rud was one of six event winners for the Bison.

 

Freshman Donte Smart dropped over a tenth of a second from his previous best to record a personal best time of 6.83 en route to winning the 60 meter title.  Smart's time is ninth all-time at NDSU.

 

Sophomore Matt Tetzlaff won his second straight 60 meter hurdles title in 8.02. Fellow sophomore Moses Heppner took first in the mile, clocking in at 4:15.89. 

 

In the 800 meters, sophomore Alec Espeland passed junior Travis Fitzke on the home stretch to claim first in 1:53.85.  Fitzke was second in 1:54.12.  The Bison also won the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:19.22.

 

Sophomore Casey Orgon finished second in both the weight throw and the shot put.  He tallied a mark of 50-8 ¾ in the shot put and notched a throw of 55-6 ¼ in the weight throw.  Junior Joe Bredahl placed second in the pole vault after clearing 15-5.

 

The Bison are back in action next weekend at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.  It will be the final tune-up for the team before aiming for its fourth straight Summit League title in Fargo Feb. 27-28.
