Four-Peat: Bison Men Capture Fourth Straight Summit League Indoor Title

FARGO, N.D. –  The North Dakota State men's track and field team won its fourth straight Summit League Indoor Championship title on Monday, Feb. 28.  NDSU is the first school in league history to win four straight indoor titles.  NDSU won six titles en route to a team tally of 208 points.  South Dakota State took second with 131 points and Oral Roberts was third with 126 points. 

 

Senior Ted Rud captured his second straight Field Championship MVP award after winning the heptathlon with a league, school and arena record of 5,541 points.  He also placed second in the long jump, sixth in the triple jump and eighth in the high jump to finish with 22 points.

 

Head coach Don Larson claimed his fourth Coach of the Year award in a vote of the league's head coaches.  Freshman Donte Smart was voted Newcomer of the Championships after placing second in the 60 meters and fifth in the 200 meters.  Smart was also a member of the second place 4x400 relay team.

 

Rud led a 1-2-3 sweep in the heptathlon.  Rud's record-breaking score of 5,541 points led the way, while redshirt freshman Andy Lillejord was second with 5,261 points, which is fourth in school history.  Junior Weston Leutz took third with 5,074 points.

 

Senior Jeramy Geditz became the first athlete in league history to win four consecutive high jump titles.  Geditz cleared a season-best 7 feet 0 ¼ inches to claim the event title in front of a home crowd.  Leutz finished seventh and Rud was eighth as both cleared 6-4 ¼ to earn points for the Bison.

 

The Bison also swept the podium in the mile run.  Junior Travis Fitzke finished first in 4:17.06.  Sophomore Moses Heppner was second in 4:17.90 and redshirt freshman Alec Espeland was third in 4:20.65.

 

In the 800 meters, senior Eric Stroh captured his second consecutive title in a time of 1:53.41.  Heppner placed third in 1:54.20.

 

Sophomore Matt Tetzlaff won the 60 meter hurdles in 8.00, while junior Kevin Jackson took fourth and Weston Leutz was sixth.  Jackson placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 21.99 and also took third in the 60 meters in 6.97.

 

The 4x400 team of Tetzlaff, Dwight Finnell, Smart and Jason Duchscherer finished second in 3:19.09.

 

In the triple jump, Lee Kersting led the Bison finished just off the podium in forth with a mark of 46-7 ½.  Rud was sixth with a leap of 46-5 ½.  Sophomore Casey Orgon came in fifth in the shot put with a personal-best mark of 51-5 ¾, which is ninth in school history.
