SIOUX FALLS, S.D. ? North Dakota State sophomore Casey Orgon won the hammer throw with a new school record mark of 193 feet 6 inches to lead the men's track and field team on the first day of action at the Summit League Championships. The Bison sit in third place after three scored events with 21 points. Host South Dakota State leads with 33 points.
Orgon broke the NDSU record of 193-4 set by Scott Johnson last season. It was a personal best by nine feet seven inches. Senior Logan Hollenkamp also notched a personal best throw of 191-1 to finish third. His mark ranks third all-time at NDSU. Fellow senior Sam Soholt also scored points, finishing sixth with a mark of 176-8.
After the first day of competition in the decathlon, sophomore Andy Lillejord sits in first place with 3,763 points. Lillejord finished first in the 100 meters in 11.00 seconds and the 400 meters in 49.95. Senior Ted Rud is only four points back with 3,759 points. Rud won the long jump with a mark of 23-7 ¼ and the high jump after clearing 6-6 ¼. Sophomore Ryan Jenson is third with 3,479 points. He posted his best finish of the day in the 400 meters, taking second in 50.99.
Jenson also competed in the javelin and finished 11th with a toss of 160-9.
The Bison continue action at the Summit League Championships Friday beginning with the final five events of the decathlon at 11 a.m. Field events begin at 3 p.m. and running events start at 4:30 p.m.
