Rud Wins Decathlon, Bison in Second After Two Days of Summit League Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Senior Ted Rud won the decathlon title to lead the North Dakota State men's track and field team on the second day of action at the Summit League Championships.  The Bison are in second place with 78.5 points, trailing host South Dakota State by only one point.  Southern Utah sits in third with 68.5 points.

 

Rud led a 1-2-3 Bison sweep in the decathlon as he claimed the title with 6,479 points.  He posted his best finish of the final five events in the 110 meter hurdles, placing first in 15.62, his third first place finish of the competition. Sophomore Andy Lillejord finished second in the with 6,394 points and junior Ryan Jenson was third with 5,948 points.  Junior Weston Leutz also earned two points for the Bison with a seventh place finish.

 

Rud also finished third in the long jump with a mark of 23 feet 6 inches.  Sophomore Lee Dhein finished seventh in the same event with a leap of 23-3 ¼.

 

In the high jump, junior Jeramy Geditz took second after clearing 6-7.  Rud tied for fifth with a mark of 6-3 ¼. 

 

Junior Andy Fillmore led the Bison in the steeplechase as he came in fourth in 9:35.18.  Senior Tom Wagner was fifth in 9:39.66, while junior Jake Henderson also notched points in a sixth place finish in 9:45.12.

 

The Bison qualified athletes for the finals in six running events. Sophomore Matt Tetzlaff won the 110 meter hurdles preliminaries in a personal-best time of 14.05.  The time is second in NDSU history and only five-hundreths off the school record.  Junior Kevin Jackson also qualified for the finals after running a time of 14.50.  Tetzlaff was also first in the 400 meter hurdles preliminaries in 54.80.

 

Jackson also qualified for tomorrow's finals in the 100 meters and 200 meters.  He clocked in at 10.87 in the 100 meters and 22.06 in the 200 meters.  Freshman Donte Smart and sophomore Lee Dhein will join Jackson in both event finals.  Freshman Nate Mattson also qualified in the 100 meters.

 

In the 400 meters, junior Jason Duchscherer led the way, qualifying for the finals in 49.51.  Freshman Dwight Finnell will also compete in the 400 meter final.

 

Senior Eric Stroh won the 800 meter preliminaries in 1:56.60.  He will be joined in the final by fellow Bison sophomore Moses Heppner and redshirt freshman Alec Espeland.

 

The tightly-contested Summit League Championships conclude Saturday.  Field events start at 10:30 a.m. and running events begin at 12:20 p.m.
